Synopsis: “Salt Rising and Falling” is a real-time simulation of rain, droughts and floods in the ocean, an endless generative animation written in JavaScript. Under a pale blue sky, the sea rises in layered bands; polygonal rocks, lit from one side, emerge from the water; flocks of birds fly at different distances; long, thin clouds drift, appear and vanish. Sunny and rainy periods alternate, each lasting from a few seconds to over a minute and a half. Under the sun, the sea evaporates and its level drops; when it rains, the drops fill it and it rises again. Rain clouds pass over the landscape, pouring onto parts of it. In long droughts, the sea may retreat until it disappears; when it floods and covers the whole sky, the landscape is reborn, with new rocks and new flocks. The cycles come and go, similar but never the same: no one sees the same ocean twice.
